Volunteer Opportunities

“Volunteers are paid in six figures...S-M-I-L-E-S”
- Gayla LeMaire

The Volunteer Program is an integral part of Ellis Memorial and draws people from the private as well as the public sector of the city. We have formed partnerships with many corporations, schools, and neighbors. They work with all of our programs serving as adult role models for the children and caring companions for our adults. They volunteer in areas such as tutoring the children; assisting in the classroom; arts & crafts projects; chaperoning on field trips; and much more.

General Opportunities

Spanish Speaking Tutor
The Ellis Memorial Madison Park Village After School is in need of a Spanish speaking volunteer to work one on one with a young boy (age 5). He is behind in his learning and having difficulty keeping up at school due to difficulties with language. This child is not assigned homework at school, and so tutoring would be more flexible, according to the needs and interests of the tutor. You would be free to come up with your own learning activities or some can be provided at the after school. We are hoping for a volunteer who could come three times a week for at least one hour. This is a great opportunity to spend individual time with a child, to prepare him to succeed in a classroom setting. The skills that you develop with this young boy have the potential to build his self confidence and increase his academic skills.

Special Needs Tutor
The Ellis Memorial Madison Park Village after school is in need of a volunteer to work with a 10 year old boy. This child is in a special needs class in school, and has fallen somewhat behind in his schoolwork. We are looking for a special individual with the time and patience to go over this child's work with him until he fully understands it. We are hoping for someone who could come in three times a week, for an hour each day to give this child the kind of individual attention that he needs. Just three hours a week has the potential to make a deep impact on his schoolwork as well as his confidence in himself. This is an amazing opportunity to develop a close relationship with a child and create positive change in his life.

Do You Enjoy Computers?
The Ellis Memorial Adult Day Health Program is in need of volunteers who are interested in sharing their knowledge and love of computers. This is a unique opportunity to work one on one with disabled adults, helping them to unlock the mysteries of the computer through playing games, setting up e-mail, or simply teaching word processing. Volunteers do not need to be computer experts! The most important aspect of this volunteer experience is that the volunteer be patient and understanding of our clients' abilities. This is a truly special opportunity. Many elders feel very isolated by this technology-based world. Just an hour or two a week can help them feel more confident and connected to the world around them. Sharing what you consider to be common knowledge could truly change their lives.

Tutors for After School
The school-age program of Ellis Memorial is currently in need of tutors to give the children more personal attention with their school work. Coming from schools where the classes are large, kids seldom get the kind of attention that they need with regard to their studies. Volunteer tutors not only help the kids with their work, but they provide a more personal relationship in which the kids can express their creativity and strengths as students. Everyone needs positive reinforcement from time to time. Tutors give the kids the support that they need and the encouragement that allows them to grow and blossom as confident individuals.

General Opportunities
We have many opportunities for volunteers at Ellis. The following will describe just a few of the opportunities available in our Infant/Toddler, Preschool, Kindergarten, School Age, and Adult Day Health (elderly/disabled) programs. Morning time- read to preschool/kindergarten children, participate in free time activities or outdoor activities. Lunch time- serve and eat lunch with our elderly/disabled clients, help feed and put down for naps our children in preschool, kindergarten, or infants/toddlers. Afternoon- various activities with all programs, homework/activities assistance, tutor school-age children, games in the gym or outside. We also have chaperone outings available for all programs, mostly during vacations. At Ellis, we work with our volunteers to match their strengths and interests to the different programs. Your time, skills, and efforts will be greatly appreciated by all of us here at Ellis!
